Using Sources

Using sources is a necessary part of writing in many subjects you study. Whenever you use sources, here are some aspects to keep in mind.

Plagarism

The Woodson Honor Code defines plagiarism as "stealing another’s work and passing it off as one’s own".

Avoiding plagiarism is simple. The first step is making sure all your work is your own. Don't copy anything from a friend or other source unless you are doing so as a direct quotation and crediting your source.

The second step is harder, but fret not. We will do our best to explain it here. In short: all information which is taken, verbatim or summarized, from any source must be cited according to the standard set by Woodson or your teacher.

Citations

Unless your teacher specifies something different, you are required to cite sources according to the Woodson Style Manual for any source used in any class. Sources should be cited with in-text citations and in a full Works Cited page.

Woodson relies on the Noodle Tools website for citation formatting and creation of a Works Cited page. This tool allows you to enter in all the relevant information about a source and recieve a properly formatted citation.

Both the Writing Center and the librarians are wondeful sources of help with this process if you are confused.

If you are found to have plagarized a source, but it is believed that you did so in error and not intetionally, you may be sent to the Citation School in lieu of punishment. Woodson Citation School is held within the Writing Center, and the hours are the same for both.

If you are sent to the Citation School, we will work through a one-on-one review of citations before giving you a short quiz on proper citation practices. This will be sent to your teacher to verify that you have reviewed the procedure for using sources in expectation that you will not make the error again.  Subsequent plagiarism offenses will be directed to the Honor Council.
